Survey Reveals Which Décor Styles Consumers Prefer by Region & More

Recent analysis of homeowners’ wants and needs compiled by the Consumer Insights Now (CIN) survey – exclusive to News Now Media Group and sponsored by Bread Financial – reveals the preferred home décor styles categorized by region, age group, income level, and housing type.

The majority of consumers surveyed said they gravitate to more “casual” styles over both “traditional” – which may not be as much of a surprise, especially in the younger demographics – and “transitional,” which may surprise some in the industry since “transitional” was often long seen as a “safe” design choice that blends two popular looks. Of course, “modern” continued its stronghold in popularity, coming in a close second to “casual,” while “contemporary” fell down the list, ranking just above “rustic” and “coastal.”

Consumers’ desire to refresh their living spaces frequently is welcome news to all categories of the home furnishings industry, particularly those specializing in accessories, wall décor, and lighting. CIN survey results show 58% of those polled “like to update home décor often,” 56% say they “want to keep up to date on style,” and 52% noted they are “always shopping for décor.”

In addition, lighting showrooms will be interested to learn that consumers are taking an eclectic approach to furnishing their homes, selecting individual pieces that complement the furniture they already have. This preference for finding  just the right look for their rooms bodes well for showrooms that present an array of style choices, price points, and unique designs. The survey statistics could also be interpreted to indicate that today’s consumers are more willing to take the time to research and consider various looks instead of buying on impulse or solely due to convenience when furniture shopping.

The highlighted charts below present more thorough consumer research conducted on these survey topics.
