Ken Dretzka, principal of California-based Dretzka & Associates, has passed away.
After entering the industry as a lighting rep, Ken Dretzka founded his own agency, Dretzka & Associates in 1985. Based in Northern California, the agency’s territory includes Northern California, Western Nevada and Hawaii. Ken’s son, Kenny, followed in his father’s footsteps and is involved in both the lighting industry and the family business.
Manufacturers represented by Dretzka & Associates posted their condolences and shared their reflections on Ken with their lighting peers.
From Maxim Lighting Group:
“It is with profound sadness that we remember Ken Dretzka, principal owner of Dretzka & Associates and Maxim Lighting’s trusted representative throughout Northern California and Hawaii for 21 of his nearly 40 years in sales.
“Twenty-one years is far more than a professional tenure. It represents thousands of conversations, miles traveled, and relationships carefully maintained. Over those years, Ken became much more than someone who represented our products. He became a trusted partner and a deeply valued member of the Maxim family.
“At the heart of Ken’s professional life was his partnership with his son, Kenny. Ken passed down far more than knowledge of the lighting industry. He passed forward an example of how to work and care to build relationships that last. When Julia [Soto] moved from Maxim to Dretzka & Associates, she did so with our genuine blessing because we knew she was joining people we trusted — our extended Maxim family. His legacy will continue through Kenny, the Dretzka & Associates team, and the many people whose lives he touched.
“The classic gentleman, we will always picture Ken arriving at market with his neatly combed silver hair, signature white mustache, broad, genuine smile dressed in a subdued Tommy Bahama shirt and tan dress pants His unmistakable happy disposition and warmth will always be remembered fondly.
“To the entire Dretzka family we extend our deepest sympathy, love, and gratitude. We are profoundly thankful for Ken’s friendship, loyalty, and the extraordinary care.”
And from Fanimation, President & CEO Nathan Frampton noted:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ken Dretzka, one of Fanimation’s original sales agents and a valued member of our extended family.
“Ken went back a long way with Fanimation. His experience, advice, and knowledge of the market helped shape our strategy, and his honest input over the years made Fanimation a better company.
“For me, this loss is personal. I spent many hours with Ken at Lightovation and ALA Conferences, often over dinner and drinks, talking about ceiling fans, the market, and life. Ken always showed up. He was honest, dependable, generous with his time, and always willing to tell me what he thought. Some of my favorite meals and memories from those events were with Ken.
“I am grateful for his guidance, his partnership, and most of all, his friendship. My thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.”
In addition to manufacturers, Ken’s peers expressed their thoughts in online tributes.
Florida-based lighting representative John Howard, CEO of Agency 51, said:
“[He was] a gentleman’s gentleman. Our industry has lost one of its finest ambassadors. It’s hard to believe how many years have passed since we first met. Ken always treated me with respect and kindness. I will miss my market catch ups on NoCal with him and Kenny. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kenny and the family.”
Laurel Neufeld, principal of Northwest Lighting in Washington, stated:
“Ken worked for my dad before I became a rep. I loved his commitment and integrity. He was always smiling and very helpful. I’m so very sorry to hear this news. Peace to his family.”
