To keep the ocean in full view no matter where residents and their guests may be sitting, the designer opted to use mud-in linear lighting fixtures in tandem with recessed downlights.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gorgeous views of the water and boats on Mission Beach in San Diego are complemented by indirect lighting inside this recent renovation of a 1980s beach house. Dianne Sheridan, owner of lighting design and specifier firm Dianne Sheridan Designs, was brought into the project after being contacted by the resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe homeowner contacted me and said he\u2019d like to have \u2018really cool lighting.\u2019 After seeing the home\u2019s contemporary design and really clean lines, I knew that I could use linear fixtures to achieve his goal. Additionally, the homeowner said, \u2018Go wild,\u2019 and I thought, okay, let\u2019s do that,\u201d Sheridan explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of the more typical pendant or island light arrangement, the designer opted for a clean ceiling look. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lighting for a Modern Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After seeing the island in the center of the kitchen, Sheridan knew recessed linear lighting would be an ideal solution. She turned to PureEdge Lighting for its patented TruQuad\u2122 product, which is a mud-in linear lighting system designed for integration into 5\/8″ drywall where it can create bold geometric patterns along a surface. Sheridan created a similar setup in the adjacent living area to complement the kitchen and provide design continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really cool at night, the way that the light shines through the glass table and projects these prisms on the ceiling, giving off even more interesting textures and vibes,\u201d Sheridan noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of the lighting in this beach house was selected to be unobtrusive.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The home\u2019s entryway features Verge ceiling channel, which is a mud-in 24VDC lighting system recessed into 5\/8″ drywall with no framing modifications required. The result is a design interplay between light, architecture, and interior design that emits a soft, ambient glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the staircases, Reveal cove and pathway fixtures were chosen to deliver floor-to-ceiling illumination. These, too, are recessed within 5\/8″ drywall without requiring joist modifications. This low-voltage system offers LED light sources in 95+ CRI for color accuracy and uniform brightness to best illuminate artwork, textures, and finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like the versatility and cohesiveness of the PureEdge systems,\u201d Sheridan noted, adding, \u201cI can always count on them to provide drawings or set of building materials based on my drawings and specs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unconventional approaches welcome<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While not specifying decorative fixtures in a home is not common for a lighting designer, there are projects \u2013 such as this one \u2013 where the client and the designer choose a different approach to ambient illumination.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
